Geochemical Characteristics of Iron in a Sediment Core at 63°40′ E, Eastern Southwest Indian Ridge: Implications on Regional Hydrothermal Activities and Source Origin

چکیده

Iron is a limiting nutrient in the marine biogeochemical cycle, and hydrothermal processes at mid-ocean ridges are well-known as one of its sources to water column. However, major portion iron precipitated near source plays an essential role oceanic elemental cycling. Here, we carried out detailed study on geochemical characteristics Fe, using sequential chemical extraction protocol, short sediment core collected from eastern Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR) understand association individual mineral phases. Major trace rare-earth element concentrations, positive europium anomaly, fractionation show that components composed biogenic, local mafic, ultramafic, origin. Solid-phase Fe speciation results indicate >60% associated with Fe-oxides phase plume particulates settled A relatively low concentration pyrite silicate (FeRes) suggests erosion sulphide minerals nearby vent field. The down-core variation reflects transformation primary ferrihydrite more stable oxide goethite/hematite and, some extent, formation minerals.

A new species of Ophryotrocha (Annelida, Eunicida, Dorvilleidae) from hydrothermal vents on the Southwest Indian Ridge

Dorvilleids were collected from hydrothermal vents on the Southwest Indian Ridge by manned submersible Jiaolong. These represent a new species of Ophryotrocha that is here described as Ophryotrocha jiaolongisp. n. This is the first dorvilleid described from vents on the Southwest Indian Ridge. It most closely resembles another vent species, Ophryotrocha akessoni Blake, 1985 from the Galapagos R...

Microbial Sulfur Cycle in Two Hydrothermal Chimneys on the Southwest Indian Ridge

UNLABELLED Sulfur is an important element in sustaining microbial communities present in hydrothermal vents. Sulfur oxidation has been extensively studied due to its importance in chemosynthetic pathways in hydrothermal fields; however, less is known about sulfate reduction. Here, the metagenomes of hydrothermal chimneys located on the ultraslow-spreading Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR) were pyro...

Microbial Community Structure of Deep-sea Hydrothermal Vents on the Ultraslow Spreading Southwest Indian Ridge

Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR) is a typical oceanic ultraslow spreading ridge with intensive hydrothermal activities. The microbial communities in hydrothermal fields including primary producers to support the entire ecosystem by utilizing geochemical energy generated from rock-seawater interactions. Here we have examined the microbial community structures on four hydrothermal vents from SWIR, r...

Geochemical and Visual Indicators of Hydrothermal Fluid Flow through a Sediment-Hosted Volcanic Ridge in the Central Bransfield Basin (Antarctica)

In the austral summer of 2011 we undertook an investigation of three volcanic highs in the Central Bransfield Basin, Antarctica, in search of hydrothermal activity and associated fauna to assess changes since previous surveys and to evaluate the extent of hydrothermalism in this basin. At Hook Ridge, a submarine volcanic edifice at the eastern end of the basin, anomalies in water column redox p...
